A great marathon runner might be able to become a great sprinter, but it's unlikely. Different genetics favour each distance. The more muscular broader framed individual is going to have genetic advantage in sprinting over the narrow lean physique that favours a marathon.
What's that got to do with your small business? Quite a bit...
Have a think for a moment about what you're good at in business, what almost comes naturally to you.
If you're a small business owner I'm willing to bet you're good at:
- Getting things off the ground
- Taking something from idea to action
- Being industrious
- Motivating and inspiring others with your vision
All incredible traits.
These traits also create a challenge for you in business, one that hundreds of thousands of small business owners struggle with every year and that leads to hundreds of thousands of good small UK business closing.
You probably don't enjoy systems and processes. Or maybe you don't mind creating them, but you hate following them.
From our years of working with small business owners in all types of industry we've recognised this time and time again.
Small business owners are great at getting a business off the ground and to a certain point but then they just get, stuck.
That point is typically around 10-30 employees maybe 50.
It's around 10-30 employees that the need for systems starts to increase in a small business.
Without systems at this point owners start to feel trapped in their businesses. They end up spending most of their time putting out fires and dealing with the operations of the business leaving very little time to work on the business.
Teams lack the structure they need to be autonomous so they end up feeling constrained and frustrated to.
The solution to this situation is simple systems... but the reality is most owners stay stuck, doing the same thing losing their motivation for the business and sanity.
The thing is it takes a very different approach, skill and mindset to systemise a business than it does to start a business. And most small business owners just don't like that part of it. They're sprinters not marathon runners.
So what's the solution? Well, you've got three options:
1) Carry on as you are doing the same thing until your business eventually has to close
2) Step up and systemise the business yourself - absolutely doable and possible
3) Partner with a marathon runner - someone who likes and is good at systemising - to do it for you
Pros and cons?
1 - Pro - You don't have to go through the discomfort of change. Con - but you're unfulfilled and can't sell your business.
2 - Pro - You don't have to spend any money with a partner. - Con - Might hate the process and it might take you way longer than it should.
3 - Pro - Done for you, fast, to a high standard whilst freeing up your time. Con - Costs money, but, if the right partner will offer guarantees that make it a win/win no risk.
